Initiatives & Impact

We are dedicated to donating to animals in need and providing education about companion animal issues in our local community and surrounding areas

Over the last eight years, I have donated over $15,000, I have educated over 1,000 kids by showing them the needs of animals and how to treat them, donated 170 slip leads to every patrol car in Suffolk County, donated 35 oxygen masks to 20 fire departments on Long Island, and my most recent project was called ACED, or Animal Care Emergency Directive.

ACED for Animals:
Stands for Animal Care Emergency Directive

This was my Gold Award, but still remained in line with the mission of my other projects.  It came in the form of a green paw-print shaped sticker and magnet for someone’s house and car, respectively, with a space provided for an animal owner to give a location. In that location would be a green envelope with an emergency contact sheet so that should the owner be incapacitated and hospitalized for any reason, a family member or friend would take care of their animals instead of their pets being brought to a shelter. Overall, this project brought together the core parts of Lucy’s Legacy: It focused on an animal-related issue, this one being what happens to pets if their owners are hospitalized, created and implemented a solution, and at the same time, educated kids about it.

Humane Education project

Using a video I created, I went to talk to youth groups about how to treat animals and used my dog, Hope, as an example of how humans’ love and compassion can heal an animal. The bulk of these information sessions was during my Bronze Award, but I still travel to talk to youth groups about this topic. To date, I have educated over 1,000 kids with this project.

Breathe

I donated about 35 pet oxygen masks priced at $80 each to 20 local fire departments and 15 out of the area. Through money I already had, donations, and almost $200 from my middle school that my class raised, I was able to complete this project.

Slip Leads

I donated 170 slip leads as part of my Girl Scout Silver Award to all the patrol cars in Suffolk County.
